For example, leather and microfiber are both durable and easy to clean, but leather may be more expensive and may require more maintenance over time. Cotton and linen are both breathable and lightweight, but they may be more prone to wrinkling and staining. Ultimately, the choice of upholstery material will depend on your personal preferences and the specific needs of your furniture.

Can an upholsterer advise on what kind of fabric to choose?

Yes, an upholsterer can definitely advise on what kind of fabric to choose for your furniture. An experienced upholsterer will have a good understanding of the different types of upholstery materials and their specific characteristics. They can provide guidance on factors such as durability, ease of maintenance, and suitability for different types of furniture. They can also help you choose fabrics that will complement the design and style of your space.

When working with an upholsterer, it’s important to communicate your preferences and needs clearly so that they can help you find the right fabric for your furniture. You can bring in photos of your space or inspiration images to help guide the process. Additionally, you may want to consider factors such as the intended use of the furniture, the level of traffic the furniture will receive, and any specific concerns you have about cleaning and maintenance. Your upholsterer can take all of these factors into consideration when recommending fabrics for your furniture.

Upholstering anqutue furniture

Upholstering antique furniture requires a delicate touch and attention to detail to preserve the integrity of the piece. Here are some general steps to follow:

  1. Evaluate the piece: Before beginning any work, assess the condition of the antique furniture. Look for any signs of damage, wear and tear, or structural issues that need to be addressed before reupholstering. If you are unsure about how to evaluate the piece, consult with a professional furniture restorer.
  2. Choose the right fabric: Select a fabric that is appropriate for the style and period of the piece, and that complements the color and design of the furniture. Be sure to choose a high-quality fabric that is durable and long-lasting.
  3. Remove the old fabric: Carefully remove the old fabric from the furniture, taking care not to damage the frame or any decorative elements. Use a seam ripper to carefully detach any seams or stitching.
  4. Repair the frame: Check the frame of the furniture for any damage or weakness. Repair any structural issues before continuing with the upholstering process.
  5. Rebuild the padding: Replace any worn or flattened padding with new material. Use a combination of foam, batting, and other materials to create a comfortable and supportive cushion.
  6. Cut and fit the new fabric: Measure and cut the new fabric to fit the furniture piece, taking care to match any patterns or designs. Use a staple gun to attach the fabric to the frame, pulling it taut but not too tight.
  7. Finish the edges: Use decorative trim, piping, or welting to finish the edges of the upholstery. This will give the piece a polished and professional look.

Overall, upholstering antique furniture is a skilled and time-consuming process that requires expertise and patience. If you are unsure about how to tackle the project, consider consulting with a professional furniture restorer who can guide you through the process and ensure that the piece is preserved for many years to come.

The sofa is usually the central piece of living room furniture around which family life revolves. It is also the part of the interior design that catches the eye the most. That’s why, if you want to change something in your living room and don’t have the desire or the means for a general overhaul, just bet on a new sofa or a cover for an old piece of furniture. This will make a clear change that no visitor will miss!

Are you thinking about buying a new sofa? Or maybe the thought of investing in new sofa upholstery is on your mind? Our interior stylists suggest which furniture you should decide on!

Upholstered sofa – why is it worth it?

Many people have a strong fondness for leather-like sofas. Indeed, this type of furniture can look very striking and fit in well with classic interior design. However, upholstered sofas also have many advantages that make it worth considering buying them:

  • they are usually cheaper than sofas made of artificial leather,
  • they come in many designs and colours, which can be matched to the interior design,
  • the softness and warmth of fabric upholstery provide peace and relaxation,
  • the fabric of the upholstered sofa is pleasant to the touch regardless of the season – unlike imitation leather or natural leather materials, which are unpleasantly hot in summer and give a cold feeling in winter.

Among the disadvantages of an upholstered sofa is the fact that it requires washing every so often. On the other hand, however, some soiling of the leather-like material can result in discolouration that cannot be cleaned at all. The choice is yours, but as you can see, in our comparison of upholstered and leather sofas, the former definitely wins!

Upholstered sofas from Surrey Sofas are all about quality workmanship. The upholstery is made of durable materials that guarantee durability during repeated use. Thanks to the possibility of configuration, we can choose furniture with or without a sleeping function for your interior design. In our shop you will find various solutions for your interior.

The more natural fibres a fabric has, the more refined, luxurious it is. Remember, however, that such fabrics are also much more delicate. If you want a fabric to be durable, rather choose one with synthetic fibres. Synthetic fabrics tend to be more resistant to tearing and abrasion, and are often hydrophobic, i.e. reducing the absorption of liquids.

The basic types of upholstery materials

Alcantara – a soft and hard-wearing fabric resembling suede. Its equivalent is alcantara. Due to its ease of cleaning, alcantara is often used for car upholstery.
Plush – a soft and fluffy material, owing its characteristics to the so-called pile, which is sheared in the production process. Plush can be divided into: velvet – has a very short pile, which is sometimes enriched with silk; velvet – has a higher pile than velvet; velour – is characterised by uneven shading. Resistant to dirt and abrasion, easy to clean.
Microphase – a soft, flexible and lustrous synthetic material. Its advantage is very high abrasion resistance. It is perfect as a sofa or armchair upholstery fabric, but will also be perfect for curtains and drapes.
Chenille – a thick, soft fabric with high resistance to stretching, abrasion, tearing and dirt. It is somewhat reminiscent of corduroy and most often has a linen weave. Because of its durability, chenille will be a good fabric for a sofa in a home with children.
Flock – a soft to the touch but hardwearing synthetic fabric that resembles velvet. It is dense and its surface has a barrier of protection that does not allow dirt to be absorbed. It is difficult to pull with claws, so if you have pets, flock will be the best fabric for a sofa for your home.
Braid – a flat woven fabric with a distinct structure, usually made from two-coloured threads. It manifests great strength.
Jacquard – a very distinctive, patterned two-sided fabric of high weight. It is created by weaving on Jacquard looms, from which it takes its name. Jacquard is renowned for its high quality and rich patterns. It is popular as an upholstery fabric for vintage-style sofas and armchairs.
Leather and eco leather – natural leather has the status of a luxurious and very durable material. Its disadvantage, apart from its high cost, is the need to clean the sofa with specialised products. A cheaper substitute is eco leather, which as an upholstery material for sofas and armchairs shows even greater durability and waterproofness.

Fabric composition

The more natural fibres a fabric has, the more refined, luxurious it is. Remember, however, that such fabrics are also much more delicate. If you want a fabric to be durable, you would rather choose one with synthetic fibres. Synthetic fabrics tend to be more resistant to tearing and abrasion, and are often hydrophobic, i.e. reducing the absorption of liquids.

Grammature

Weights are an indication of the density of a fabric in grams per square metre. The higher the grammage, the thicker the fabric. However, it is not the only indicator of a fabric’s strength.

Abrasion resistance – Martindale test

If you are interested in the durability of a fabric, it is essential to pay attention to this property. The Martindale test is performed using a machine that rubs the fabric under constant pressure until it is worn through. The number tells us after which cycle the fabric has been damaged. It is assumed that 2,000-4,000 cycles is about a year of very intensive use. The range of results of this test is very wide indeed. I would rather advise against fabrics below 20,000 cycles. Nowadays you will encounter fabrics with scores even above 210,000 cycles.

Pilling resistance of the fabric

This is, in other words, the fabric’s resistance to mottling. Here, too, tests are carried out and the results are expressed on a scale of 1-5, where 5 is no change and 1 is complete pilling of the surface. You may also come across category A (pilling resistance) and B (no pilling resistance) designations.

Upholstered furniture are products upholstered with elegant material, which have been very popular for many years because of their style and functionality. In order for them to always look good, it is necessary to take proper care of them. Want to know how to take care of upholstered furniture? Read our article!

Upholstered furniture in your interior

This is a popular solution for arranging a living room or bedroom. Upholstered furniture, in addition to its utilitarian function, also combines a decorative function. In order for them to serve us for a long time, we need to properly care for them and take care of their condition. Upholstered furniture care is an important and necessary activity, which largely depends on the type and quality of the material they are upholstered with.

Below you will read about some important factors that you should familiarize yourself with before buying upholstered furniture and before cleaning it for the first time.

Currently in furniture stores we can find a great number of materials with which furniture is upholstered. Each of the fabrics has different specifications and requires proper care, so that the material will remain fresh and shiny as new for a long time.

Making upholstered furniture – how to clean it

The second factor is to know the type of material and how to maintain upholstered furniture. When we use a sofa or chaise longue every day, stains happen. Depending on the material with which the furniture is upholstered, we must act quickly in each case.

When we are dealing with eco-leather we must pay attention not to clean it with a very wet cloth. A gently damp cloth will be a much better solution. We also add gray soap or a special dedicated cleaner for eco-leather to the cleaning. On a daily basis, we will keep the eco-leather upholstered furniture clean with a soft cloth – this is to collect the dust that settles on the furniture. It is also recommended to clean the furniture with special agents once every six months. Avoid chemicals that can contribute to damage and destruction of the furniture. These include, for example, liquid soaps, bleach, solvents or dish liquid.

Furniture upholstered with upholstery fabrics is best cleaned with a special upholstery cleaning cap or a soft natural bristle brush. To help with everyday, delicate dirt, a cloth made of microfiber will work well. When cleaning, avoid alcohol- and solvent-based cleaners.

Furniture upholstered with natural leather should be cleaned on a regular basis. The basis for keeping them clean is frequent vacuuming and regular removal of delicate planes with a damp cloth. On the other hand, once every 6 months it is advisable to fully clean leather upholstery using a soft sponge and special agents designed for cleaning and maintenance of leather upholstered furniture.

How to preserve upholstered furniture

When buying furniture, it is also a good idea to get a special liquid for cleaning dirt from upholstered furniture. These liquids will not only help remove stains from the furniture, but will also preserve the material. The specifics should be tested in an invisible place on the furniture – then we check whether they definitely do not cause discoloration.

An extremely important element that the new owner must check is to determine the specific material from which the new upholstered furniture is made. Then choose the care for the material and take care of the new articles of furniture in your apartment. They will return the favor by hosting you in their soft cushions for years to come.

Upholstered furniture for the living room – these are the hottest hits of the season

This year, modern upholstered furniture that is functional, minimalist and subdued in color, preferably monochromatic, will triumph in living rooms (and lounges). Futuristic motifs are welcome, but also – as in previous years – references to nature. Earthy colors reign supreme, especially browns in various shades. Simple forms, often edgy, and fabrics that are pleasant to the touch are valued. The upholstery should be durable and eco-friendly. Natural and recycled materials lead the way. If leather, only eco. Among sofas, armchairs and pouffes, models on wooden legs come to the fore. Both the sofa set and the independent modern modular corner sofas shy away from the ornamentation characteristic of the glamour style, paying homage to simplicity. They are enlivened by patterned accessories, especially those decorated with geometric patterns.

Take a look at what sofas, pouffes and armchairs from Surrey Sofas offer stand out this year in terms of upholstered furniture.

Sofas and corner sofas – the stars of the living room

Sofas and corner sofas are the center of the living room lounge area. First of all, they must be comfortable. In a living room of smaller size it is better to put a small two-seater sofa, but in a spacious room you can go wild with a larger, more presentable model (or even two!).

Sofa. She is the one who rules here. She is the undisputed queen of any living room. She proudly displays her charms, and her strong personality dominates the room. Who once faced the task of selecting her, knows that it often resembles winning the favor of a capricious princess. Therefore, completing furniture for the living room, it is worth starting with this (un)graceful piece of furniture. In small rooms, a 2 or 3-seater model on simple metal legs will present itself best – they will add optical lightness and will not overwhelm the interior. If you care about additional sleeping space, and this will always come in handy, choose a sofa bed. Unannounced guests will no longer surprise you. In larger living rooms, corner sofas with simple forms are ideal. Forget about grays and beiges! Opt for elegant velour in the color of the night sky or delicate powder pink. Fluffy upholstery will add coziness, and strong colors combined with minimalist design will balance each other perfectly and certainly will not give the impression of exaggeration.

Armchair. It may seem that there is no place for it among modern living room furniture. After all, how is the old-fashioned earlobe supposed to find its way into such a respectable group? Fortunately, there are many models on the market with geometric shapes, ideal for rooms with a cool modern style. Remember that ready-made sofa sets are a song of the past. Complement the sofa with another model of armchair, or at least change the color of its upholstery. You can break the classic sofa gray with a strong accent of green or orange. This is just a modern combination!

Footstools and poufs … so your feet don’t hurt. When your choice of sofas, armchairs and coffee tables is over, still think about a comfortable footstool or pouffe. These charming seats have again been appreciated by interior designers, and the multitude of designs and colors allows you to easily match them to any living room. For the modern one, choose models with smooth surfaces and simple geometric shapes – cylinders and cubes. Here you can also go wild with color, especially if the rest of the seats are kept in muted tones.

Additions. Can modern be cozy? Modern furniture is different, and so are living rooms. Some may resemble a minimalist hermitage, full of glass and concrete, others – elegant apartments straight out of New York skyscrapers. Their cool character and restrained forms do not exclude coziness at all. It can be taken care of at any time. The recipe is simple – accessories: a soft modern carpet in the lounge corner, pillows on the sofa, flowers in a vase, a collage of paintings on the wall… In combination with the subtle light of wall lamps and floor lamps, they will warm up even the most ascetic interior.

There is no denying that the glamour style has taken hold in our interiors for good. Nowadays it is the one that dominates our living rooms and dining rooms and, most importantly, introduces a luxurious and prestigious overtone to the interior. However, when it comes to a dining room arranged in glamour style, it cannot do without chairs. How can they be selected?

Chairs in glamour style – upholstered models

When looking for the perfect glamour-style chairs for the dining room, we should first pay attention to upholstered models. Why? Because they are the ones that most reflect the characteristics of glamour style with their appearance and fit into the framework of Hollywood glitz. In fact, their choice is quite large, so when deciding on such glamour style chairs we should first consider their color. It is worth ensuring that the upholstery matches the already existing arrangement in the dining room as closely as possible.

If, on the other hand, we decide to make our dining room much more bold and feisty, then it is best to choose them in a contrasting color. If the choice is for a strong and distinctive upholstery, then it is important to match the color of the wooden frame as closely as possible to the color of the table and possibly other furniture in the dining room. After all, the most important thing is that it is the upholstery itself that acts as an expressive accent. In this way, we will be able to create an unusual arrangement that is sure to surprise not only ourselves, but also our guests.

Chairs in glamour style with fur seat

Another option that glamour style chairs give us is their fur seat. However, before deciding to buy such chairs, it is worth considering several aspects. Namely:

  • if there are children in the house, then furry glamour style chairs will not last too long in the dining room;
  • perhaps this type of glamour style chair will work better in the living room, so as not to damage its seat?
  • will our arrangement really not be disturbed by this type of chair?

In fact, glamour style chairs with a fur seat are extremely prestigious and can bring an extremely luxurious atmosphere to any interior. In addition, we can not forget also that the fur seat is extremely soft and comfortable, and therefore this type of chairs will also be extremely comfortable.

Glamour style chairs also for a minimalist dining room!

In fact, upholstered glamour style chairs can also be successfully matched to a dining room that has been arranged in a minimalist style. Then it is worth deciding, first of all, to use upholstery in black or white, with possible additions. Then such chairs in glamour style will not be too extravagant, while their full elegance and class will be preserved.

Advantages of upholstered beds

Upholstered bedroom beds, including the continental model, are some of the most popular bedroom furniture. And to what do they owe their popularity? What are the main advantages of such beds?

  • High sleeping comfort.
  • Rich choice of upholstery fabric, color and texture.
  • A large, comfortable headrest, which most upholstered bedroom beds are equipped with, provides comfort when reading or watching movies before bedtime. In addition, it protects the wall from dirt.
  • The soft upholstery of the bed is safe for children and seniors, in whom any hard impact could cause bruises.
  • Most upholstered beds have additional amenities, such as a container for storing bedding or pull-out drawers. Such an upholstered bed with a storage bin is a great way to economize a small bedroom.

The advantages of upholstered beds are not limited to either appearance-related perks or pure functionality. Upholstered bed is the quintessence of the best features of sleeping furniture:

  • Aesthetics – large, beautifully quilted box sides and impressive headboard make the upholstered bed look majestic and can be a decoration of any bedroom,
  • Bedding container – a spacious bedding container is a great place to store other items as well, such as tablecloths, plaids, children’s toys or Christmas tree decorations,
  • Sleep comfort – the quality of sleep in an upholstered bed is determined by high-quality spring (pocket) mattresses, but also the size of the bed and the height of the furniture, which makes it very easy to get into bed and get up in the morning,
  • Personalization potential – you can freely choose colors, patterns or textures of upholstery fabrics and thus perfectly match the bed to the decor and style of the bedroom,
  • Spacious headboards – headboards are very comfortable, extremely aesthetic, and also protect the wall behind the bed from dirt,
  • Soft upholstery – all parts of the bed are covered with fabric and a layer of soft filler underneath, which effectively protect against accidental injuries,
  • Price – upholstered beds are distinguished from other sleeping furniture by an excellent relation of aesthetics and quality of workmanship to price.

Do upholstered beds have drawbacks?

Upholstered beds, like everything, also have some disadvantages. Among those most often mentioned is the difficulty of keeping some upholstery fabrics clean. Upholstered beds will also not work if you have pets at home, such as cats or dogs that like to scratch such furniture. Nor are these models recommended for allergy sufferers. On the other hand, the most frequently mentioned disadvantages of upholstered continental beds include their height (too high for some) and rather large size, which, however, is also often considered an advantage of such furniture.
